How to actually choose.
Buy Hyper Color if you want maximum brightness and zero complexity. One color, hardwired, always works. It is the right answer for a work machine or for anyone who finds pairing a phone to a whip absurd.
Buy Standard – Remote if you want color options without your phone. The remote lives in the cab, it works with gloves on, and there is no app to update or Bluetooth to drop mid-ride.
Buy Standard – App if you would rather control it from your phone and do not need advanced patterns.
Buy the 187 if the whip is part of the build. This is where chasing, cascading and rainbow effects live, controlled through 5150's own app rather than a generic one — which is the difference between a whip that does a few things and one you actually play with. It is the series most people mean when they say 5150.
Buy 187 Platinum if you are buying flags anyway. The aluminum tip and swivel flag clips are included rather than added, which closes most of the price gap to the standard 187.
On height: taller is more visible and more flexible. Most riders run 4 to 6 foot on a full-size machine. Shorter whips at 1 to 3 foot are for youth machines, low-clearance riding and interior use.

Buying and Fitting
Most 5150 products are universal. Whips, flags, extensions, harnesses and controllers are not model-specific — a heavy-duty flag is a heavy-duty flag. What varies by machine is where the whip mounts and how you get power to it, which is why mounts and vehicle-specific harnesses exist.
What you need for a first whip install: the whip itself, a mount or magnetic base, and a way to power it — a harness wired to the machine, or a switch. Most whips include the magnetic base. Confirm the rest before ordering, and if you are unsure, tell us your machine and how you want to switch it and we will list the pieces.
Check your local rules. Whip and flag requirements vary by riding area and by state — height, flag size and whether a light counts. Many dune areas specify a minimum height and a flag of a particular dimension. Worth two minutes before you buy a 3-foot whip for a place that requires 6.

What is the difference between the 187 Series and the Standard whips? Control and effects. Standard whips give you color and simple patterns through an RF remote or a generic Bluetooth app. The 187 runs on 5150's own app and adds the color wheel, custom modes, chasing, cascading and rainbow effects. Both are USA made with the same lifetime warranty and the same magnetic base. If you want a whip that lights up, Standard is enough. If you want a whip that performs, get the 187.
What does 187 Platinum add over the regular 187? An aluminum tip and swivel flag clips, included rather than bought separately. Same app, same effects. If you are running flags, the Platinum is close to a wash on price.
Do I need a light, or is a flag enough? Depends where you ride. Many areas require a whip and flag of a minimum height regardless of lighting, and a non-lighted day whip satisfies that for well under half the price of a lighted one. If you ride at night or in the dunes, a lighted whip is a real safety item rather than decoration. Check your riding area's rules first.
How do the whips mount and how hard is the install? Every whip includes a magnetic quick-release base, so it lifts off for trailering without tools or pins. The base mounts to your machine, and the whip powers through a harness or a switched circuit. The wiring is the only part that takes thought — an hour for most people, less if the machine already has a harness or an accessory circuit.
Are they really covered by a lifetime warranty? Yes, on the whips. That is 5150's own coverage and it is the main reason to choose them over a cheaper imported whip, which will typically fade, yellow or fail at the base within a couple of seasons. What size whip should I get? Four to six foot for a full-size machine, which is what most riding areas expect and what makes you visible over a dune lip.
